Orphans and Vulnerable Children

Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) are a major concern. Broader OVC issues are that these children do not have the basic material needs that their families would supply - food, security, shelter, clothing, schooling, access to quality health and medical services (including psychological support services) and parental love and the feeling of the belonging. They may not have a positive connection with the primary care giver, they may be dispossessed of property and disinherited. This is the angle MACODEP comes in as a primary care giver and a foster parent that caters for all their material needs.

Fiona lost both parents two years ago due to HIV/AIDS. She found her way to us after her living situation was distrubed by the post-election violence this year after disputed election results. When she joined us, she was sick and rarely left bed due to opportunistic infections. After undergoing child-centered counseling, she tested positive for HIV. She began taking AIDS drugs, also called ARV (anti-retroviral) or HART drugs. She has responded very well on the regimen. She is now up and about and is attending elementary school.

Her vision is to become a community nurse here in Kibera so that she can take care of others living with HIV.
